6 Water Saving Tips
With more and more of rural Australia being affected by drought, conserving water has become more important than ever. Even if you are not living on these affected locations, adhering to these water saving tips and cutting back on water usage will also reduce your utility bill. Help conserve our planet and its precious resource – water.
So as a result, we at Jewelbic Plumbing & Gas thought we would prepare a quick money saving guide to water.
1. Turn off your tap whilst brushing your teeth.
Did you realise that water comes out of the faucet at approx. 9 litres per minute so don’t let the water just go down the drain whilst you brush. You multiply that out by 2 times a day of brushing by the number of people in your house by 365 days a year and WOW that is a saving!
2. Fix your leaking taps.
If you have a leak on one or more of your taps, did you know that you are wasting up to 20,000 litres of water per year! That you have to pay for also in water consumption. So, give us a call today if this is the case and we will replace your leaking taps to reduce your water wastage and bill. We can help you implement these water saving tips.
3. Cut your showers short.
This is one of the more simple water saving tips. It’s also a great starting point for being more sustainable, as the typical shower uses up to 45 litres of water per minute. Try to cut back to less than a 4 minute shower (use your phone timer). If everyone in the household can commit to this, you could reduce your water usage by 20%.
4. Check your toilets for leaks.
Again, like leaking tapware, a leaking toilet is a huge cost per annum to you and our environment in wasted water. One of our more unique water saving tips is to test your toilet for leaks using some food colouring. Pour it into the tank and wait to see if if the dye appears in the bowl within a hour – do not flush. If the dye does appear in the bowl, you do have a leak and will require our services for the toilet repair. Call us on 08 9244 1446 to book your fix.
5. Don’t run your dishwasher or washing machine until it’s full.
One of our more obvious water saving tips, but if you can just wait that extra meal to completely full up the dishwasher or that extra day to make your washing machine a full load then this is not only going to save you on water but also your time as you are becoming more efficient.
6. Buy high efficiency dishwasher, washing machine and hot water systems.
We know that this comes at a cost however over a few years it will pay itself off in water saving dollars. Did you know that front loaders generally use less water than top loader washing machines? Check your appliances energy rating today! We can come and help you with what appliance works best for you and your home and family. Not everyone can update all these appliances on one go so maybe break it down to 1 per year as the saving certainly do out way the initial costs.
Whether you decide to cut back on one or all of the above water saving tips we have listed above, any change no matter how big or small will make a change for the greater good of our planet Earth and your pocket.
